Himalayan Pink Salt Milk Bath

A few months back, I found a recipe for a Pink Himalayan Hot Process Soap recipe in an issue of Willow and Sage.  I have not tried it yet, but I am intimated to try it.  I am building my confidence to try it sometime in the future.  But in the meantime,, I found this Himalayan Pink Salt Milk Bath recipe from The Natural Beauty Workshop that is really to make. What attracted me to this recipe is that the pink salt brings a pretty color to bath products.  What is great is that it can be used to speckle bath bombs, color body scrubs or to make a layered milk bath more spectacular..  It has a gorgeous mottle array of warm pinks and red from the natural mineral content.  According to The Natural Beauty Workshop, it is packed with more than eighty beneficial trace minerals like Calcium, Potassium, Magnesium, Iron and Copper.  When added to bath formulations, it is believed to help encourage, balance skin and event soothe skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis.

Chamomile Bath Powder

Many years ago, I took a class from Lori Nova at DeAnza College in Cupertino.  One of the products was a milk bath.  It was a very simple product in very cute packaging.  I found this recipe from The Natural Beauty Workshop called Chamomile Bath Powder. This recipe is just as simple and the really only difference is the fact that the ingredients are slightly different. Once you make this simple recipe it is just as easy to use in the bath.  Just add a few tablespoons into the warm bath water, get in and lay back.  Then just let the calming scents and smooth water envelope your senses.  When you get out of the tub, you will feel mild and butter soft.

Tropical Pina Colada Milk Bath Recipe

Many years ago I took a class from Lori (Nova) Endres on how to make our own milk baths.  We used a powdered milk. It has been awhile since I took the class. While searching the internet  I came across this recipe for a Tropical Pina Colada Milk Bath from Sapphire Blue Inc. and wanted to check it out.  Now the first ingredient is coconut milk.  I know that is comes in a liquid form and I am guessing that it what is applied here because I am not aware of it coming powder form.  I am going to have to inquire and ask. Once I find out, then I would let you know.

How to Make a Homemade Milk Bath

The first time I heard of a milk bath is when I took a class from Lori Nova from The Nova Studio in 2003. Her recipe is wonderful, but I was wondering how milk bath recipes would vary from creator to creator. There are many different milk bath recipes on the internet and they all have the same basic ingredient of powdered milk. In the tutorial, How to Make a Homemade Milk Bath by eHow Contributor, Fahlen Brown, uses alot of natural ingredrients like atmeal, dried orris root, cornstarch and almond meal.

If you are new to a milk bath, according to Fahlen, a milk bath is a relaxing way to unwind and pamper your skin at the same time. While there are products you can use to create a milk bath, some prefer a milk bath with natural ingredients that can be made at home. This way, you can avoid any artificial ingredients and synthetic perfumes. Making your own milk bath is also less expensive than buying store-bought products.

If you have made milk baths in the past, I would like to have your input on whether or not to add a fragrance or essential oil. What is your preference fragrance or no fragrance? I often wondered would a fragrance oil make the powered milk go bad? I never tried it before so I was just wondering what the opinion was out there.

1 cup Baking Soda
4 Tbsp. Corn Starch
2 Tbsp. Cream of Tartar
1/4 cup Handcrafted Soap (cut in chunks)

Optional, fragrance with 1/4 - 1/2 tsp. essential or Fragrance Oil as desired Use a food processor, add chunked handcrafted soap and oatmeal until grainy. Add powdered milk, baking soda, corn starch and cream of tartar. Add fragrance and process until it's powdery. Store in glass jar.
Directions for use: Use 1/4 cup per bath, add to running hot water.

Fizzling Milk Bath

Here is a great recipe from Pat Storer at Skinny Dippin:

Ingredients:

11-part goats milk powder
3 parts dry milk
1 part citric acid
1 part cornstarch
1/2 part borax
2 parts Epsom salts
2 parts baking soda
2 parts rock salt crystals
Few drops of FDA color

Directions:

Blend all in a Ziploc. For each 2 oz. of mix, I put in 1 ml. Herbal essential oils. This is milliliter not part on the essential oil. It is not very much. You can substitute fragrance oils or other essential oils but will have to use judgment on how much. Remember also that not fragrance or essential oils are sensible to use in baths. Check with someone who knows if you are not sure first since a person will be soaking in them.
Note: You can make in the quantity you desire: (example a 'part' can be one tsp., one T., one cup, one bucketful, etc.)

Cappuccino Milk Bath Recipe

Love Cappuccino? Here is a great recipe from The Natural Beauty Workshop on how to make Cappuccino Milk Bath. This recipe makes (1)  20 oz. (by volume) container:

Ingredients

•1/4 cup Baking Soda
•1/4 cup Dendritic Salt
•1 cup Oat Flour, Fine
•1 cup Whole Milk Powder
•2 tablespoons Cocoa Powder
•1/2 ounce Vanilla Frappuccino Fragrance Oil*

Directions

In a medium sized mixing bowl, combine the Baking Soda and Dendritic Salt, and stir well. Measure and pour 1/2 ounce of Vanilla Frappuccino Fragrance Oil into the bowl and mix it well to disperse the oil. Next, add 1 cup of Oat Flour and 1 cup of Whole Milk Powder and stir again, making sure to break up any clumps. Measure 1/2 cup of the mixture and set it aside in a smaller bowl. Add two tablespoons of Cocoa Powder to the large portion of mixture and stir it well to disperse its color. You can add more Cocoa Powder if you want the color of the powder to be more dramatic. Spoon the brown mixture into the container first, followed by the white portion of mixture. Make sure to tap the powder down as you are filling the container so that you can fill it completely.

This recipe was created for use with our 3x6 Acetate Rounds, but it would look lovely in almost any tall, clear jar. Lavender Milk Bath Recipe

Do you like to take baths? And is lavender your favorite scent?  Then why not combine the two to create this relaxing milk bath.  To make a soothing and relaxing Lavender Milk Bath, fill a tub with hot water, then add the following:

1/2 cup dead sea salts
1/2 cup epsom salts
8 drops organic lavender essential oil
4 drops neroli essential oil
1 cup powdered milk
1/4 cup lavender buds
1/4 cup baking soda
5 drops jojoba oil *

Directions:
Stir around and soak. Enjoy with candlelight and some relaxing music.

*for oilier skin types you may want to omit the jojoba oil

**epsom salts contain magnesium to soothe and relax muscles

**try filling the tub with hotter water than you would normally use and letting it sit for 15 minutes to cool and allow some of the chlorine to evaporate before your soak

***after your bath you may want to leave the water in the tub for an hour or so to continue to enjoy the relaxing lavender scent in your home

How to Make Your Own Vegan Milk Bath

Milk baths have been well known in spas for hundreds of years for their skin benefits. Vegans can't enjoy a more traditional milk bath since they are opposed to the use of animal milk, but there's still ways to enjoy excellent milk baths if you're a vegan.  Here is an article written by aflowercross, on How to Make Your Own Vegan Milk Bath.

What I find interested is the use of coconut milk as a replacement for cows milk. From the milk recipe I received in Lori Nova's class, we used powdered milk that you can find at your local grocery store.  I do not think that coconut milk came in a powdered form, but if you cannot find it in powdered form there are probably other non-dairy powdered milks out on the market.  But any rate this would be a great for someone you know who is a vegan.

Tropical Nut Milk Bath recipe

Tropical Nut Milk Bath from Make Your Cosmetics
by HTN President Donna Maria

This simple yet refreshing recipe smells heavenly in a soothing bath soak and, since it contains no oil, it does not leave a ring around the tub. The vegetable glycerin and milk combine to soften the skin. You can double this recipe, or even triple it, if you have an especially large tub.

Yield: Approx. 18 ounces

Ingredients:

16 ounces coconut milk
2 ounces vegetable glycerin
1-2 teaspoons coconut fragrance oil

Procedure:

Combine all ingredients into a cup and mix well. Use the smaller amount of fragrance oil or the larger one, depending on your personal preference. Add Tropical Nut Milk Bath to warm drawn bath and swish well to incorporate fully. Step in and be luxurious in a tropical kind of way. Enjoy!!

Moisterizing Milk Recipe

by Allison B. Kontur (http://www.bathbodysupply.com/)

You will need:
4 oz Avocado Oil
4 oz Stearic Acid
5 ml (1 tsp) Sodium Bicarbonate (Baking Soda)
2 oz Vegetable Glycerin
16 oz Distilled Water
7.5 ml (1.5 tsp) Liquipar Optima (Preservative)
7.5 ml (1.5 tsp) Fragrance (optional)

Phase 1: Combine avocado oil and stearic acid in a double boiler over low heat until it becomes a clear liquid. Remove from heat and set aside. (At the same time, you should be heating the ingredients from Phase 2 in a separate double boiler.)

Phase 2: Combine distilled water, baking soda and vegetable glycerin over a water bath or in a double boiler. Heat until it boils and slowly add the water solution from Phase 2 to the oil solution in Phase 1. The mixture will foam slightly as carbon dioxide (CO2) is released from the baking soda.

Phase 3: Pour the entire mixture into a mixing bowl (or blender). Whip on high speed for 2-3 minutes. The mixture will be light, white & fluffy. Cover and allow the mixture to cool completely.

Phase 4: Add fragrance (optional) and preservative when cool, and mix again to incorporate completely before packaging.Note: This recipe yields a very watery, thin moisturizer. It could be dispensed in a spray application, but we used a standard PET Bullet bottle with an Orifice Reducer and Silver Phenolic Cap.
